In recent time, there has been an increase in rape cases in Nigeria. Nearly day by day, news of sexual assault of both the minors and matured women are aired on radios, TVs and newspapers.

One of the most spectacular rape offences committed in Nigeria in recent time is the one reported by a former Nigeria Air Force policewoman, Uzezi.

In 2011, Igbobie Beauty Uzezi, a former Air Policewoman, alleged her male instructor of sexual assault. The protracted case which has been in court ever since has taken a new turn as Committee for the Defense for Human Rights (CDHR) has taken up the court case and asking for N500 million on her behalf.

Uzezi claimed that as an Air Policewoman, she was drugged, raped and infected with Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) by Flight Lieutenant B. S. Vibelko. Uzezi also said that after the assault, Nigeria Air Force dismissed her.

She had also indicted the NAF of not adequately penalizing her then trainer for the alleged crime.

However, Malachy Ugwummadu, the President of the CDHR, said on January 5, 2017 that the organization had filed a suit at a Federal High Court in Lagos with regard to the drugging, violent raping and wrongful dismissal of the applicant.

The Committee for the Defense for Human right asked the court to award a sum of N500 million to Beauty Uzezi for the calculated and gross violation of the applicant’s fundamental human right.

The respondents in the case are Nigeria Air Force, Chief of Air Staff; Air Office Commanding; Vibelko; and Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice.

The suit also asked the court to order the Inspector-General of Police to investigate, arrest and charge Vibelko and all other accomplices for the crime of rape and attempted murder in accordance with the laws of Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The suit told the court to also instruct the NAF and Chief of Air Staff to recall and restate Igbobie Beauty Uzezi into the Nigeria Air Force or allows her to voluntarily retire and be given all retirement benefits.

In her statement, Uzezi said after she was raped by the senior officer, she was infected with STD which led to the manifestation of chronic pelvic inflammatory disease and a host of others.
